Chapter Twenty-Four

"What the FUCK?" Anna shouts. She fumbles back into her clothes without taking her eyes off of the water. "Come back!"

But it's gone. What was that?!

A dark face with purple eyes and tight black ringlets was watching her from the water. She's positive. It swam away and hasn't resurfaced.

When it dove, Anna swears she saw scales. A fin?

A mermaid? No way. No way she saw that. It must have been her imagination.

She runs out of the cave and searches the beach and water. Whatever it was, must have left through the cave system and headed back into the ocean.

That was a mermaid. There's no way she imagined it, and it couldn't have been anything else.

It had a human face. Other than the purple eyes, she would have mistaken it for a person if she hadn't seen the tail.

How many afternoons had Anna spent on the edge of a dock, staring into the waves for a chance of glimpsing a mermaid? Countless.

This was real. She's not crazy. She saw a goddamn mermaid.

Echo waits at the bottom of the cave pool to collect herself. She was panting heavily before she dove, and now she forces herself to breathe slowly through her gills.

The human saw her. Briefly, but absolutely.

Horror stories her mother has hammered into her brain flash before her. Nets, spears, humans capturing them and keeping them in tanks. Eating them. Stuffing them to hang inside their homes as prizes. They'll get Echo, then they'll find her family, and the whole clan, and no creature will be safe again.

But the human wouldn't do that to her, would she? No one that beautiful could hurt her.

Echo's head reels. She should be concerned with a number of things, but the only thought she has is of what she saw the human doing. Her life could be in danger. But every inch of Echo's body and every thought in her brain is fully dedicated to her urgent need to transform into a specific rock.

Anna walks quickly to the lighthouse.

What is she going to do when she gets there? Should she tell her dad? She thinks of the shotgun he keeps over his bed and decides she won't.

Should she...set a trap?

For what? She'd never turn a mystical creature over to humans. That would be the worst thing she could do.

Okay, so this is her secret. She saw a mermaid, and she can't tell a soul. So what should she do?

What would twelve-year-old Anna have done?

She remembers one summer where she made two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches every day. She'd walk to the end of the dock, drop one into the water, and eat her own. She was sharing lunch with the mermaids, she'd explained to her dad when he asked where all the fucking bread had gone.

Anna hears the men still puttering around upstairs when she hurries into the kitchen to fill her jacket pockets with honey buns.

Echo should go home. She knows this. She also knows that she's supposed to tell the clan leaders that she was spotted.
